It’s not difficult to feel ambitious when thinking about making Christmas gifts for family and friends. The list of projects looks simple, so it seems, finishing them before Christmas looks positive. Equally, it’s also easy to be carried away with planning the festive season that you lost track of time. Then finishing the crochet projects before Christmas seems impossible.
Now, your plan falls apart and you wish you only had to worry about one crochet pattern instead of twenty. Self-demands from a passionate crafter can be very tough, especially if you’re a perfectionist.
So, for this Christmas – the best way to avoid this dilemma is to go for one crochet pattern, but to make several gifts from the same design.
This slouchy beanie is so easy and quick to make. It takes only a few hours if you already know the basic crochet stitches. Don’t worry if you are new to crochet, as this is a simple pattern, so it won’t take long to start crocheting.
Here, I use Manos del Uruguay – Wool Clasica (100% wool) in colour: #9134 Unlimited (space-dyed), but it would look equally nice in other colours or different types of wool. The chunky weight is quick to crochet up, which makes a perfect winter warmer.
You will need:
- 1 x 100g of chunky yarn that uses a 7.00mm size crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations:
Finished measurements: approx. 41cm in diameter at brim of beanie. Length 29cm approx. Depending on your tension, the size may be bigger or smaller. The fabric may stretch with regular use.

(instead of working into both of the loops under the stitch which you normally would, work on the back loop of the stitch – the loop that is further away from you is the back loop)

Step 1: Make an adjustable ring
Rnd 1: Make ch-3 (count as 1tr), then make 1-tr into ring 9 times more, pull shorter yarn end on adjustable ring to bring circle closer. Ending with ss into top of ch-3 to join ring = 10sts.
Begin increase: working (TBL) through back loops
Rnd 2: ch-3 (count as 1tr), work 1tr (TBL) through back loop in same st, continue to make 2tr (into back loop) in each of next 9sts. Ending with ss into top of ch-3 at beg of round = 20sts.
Rnd 3: ch-3 (count as 1tr), work 1tr in same st, then 1tr into next st, and continue to work *(2tr into next st, then 1tr into next), rep *( ) 8 times more. Ending with ss into top of ch-3 at beg of round = 30sts.
Rnd 4: ch-3 (count as 1tr), then work 1tr in next st, 2tr into next st, *(1tr into each of next 2sts, 2tr into next), rep *( ) 8 times more. Ending with ss into top of ch-3 at beg of round = 40sts.
Rnd 5: ch-3 (count as 1tr), work 1tr in same st, then 1tr into each of next 3sts, continue to work *(2tr in next st, and 1tr in each of next 3sts), rep *( ) 8 times more. Ending with ss into top of ch-3 at beg of round = 50sts.
Rnds 6-15: ch-3 (count as 1tr), then work 1tr (TBL – through back loop) in each of next 49sts. Ending with ss into top of ch-3 at beg of round = 50sts.
Rnds 16-18: ch-1, then work 1dc (TBL – through back loop) in each of next 50sts. Ending with ss into first st at beg of round = 50sts.
Step 2: Assembly
Fasten off and weave in securely before cutting yarn tail. Pull shorter yarn end on adjustable ring to tighten, weave in. Turn work out with right side facing. If you have time to spare – try blocking your finished project – it will settle the stitches to give the beanie a professional look.
