Coming up Diasies

Devotees of crochet will refuse to let sweaty fingers get in their way of crocheting – even under the heat! Those sticky fingers cannot come between you and your beloved crochet. Even if you have to keep wiping away the dampness that clings onto your work.

My action keeps inviting strange glances from my partner, and then the raised eyebrows as he shook his head tells me how addictive crochet can become.

It is true that summer heat can deter some crocheters away from their projects. Besides, it can be challenging trying to keep your work dry from wet fingers. But if you are lucky enough to get some crocheting done in the garden, then that is a bonus. The garden is an ideal place to think and find beautiful inspirations for new projects.

Daisy corsage

My inspiration came when I spotted a beautiful display of white and pink daisies by the rock garden.  The tiny flowers, with its delicate petals and small leaves, looks frail under the glaring sun.

Enjoy this free daisy crochet pattern; the daisy corsage will complement a light summer jacket or a beige linen dress.

Rnd – round

*( ) – rep within brackets
RS – right side

Finished Measurements: approx. (L14cm/5.5in) x (W7.5cm/3in)
Your finished piece may be bigger or smaller – depending on your tension.  Try using a smaller or larger hook, and a different type of yarn to personalise your design.

Step 1: Yellow disc florets
Rnd 1: With yarn A, make an adjustable ring.  Make ch-1, work 1dc into centre of ring 8 times.  Pull shorter yarn end to draw ring closer.  Ending with ss into first dc at beg of round to join =8sts.
Rnd 2: ch-1, 2dc inc in each of next 8sts around, ss into first dc at beg of round to join =16sts.  One circle made.  Fasten off, leaving approx. (13cm/5in).

Pull yarn end on adjustable ring to tighten hole.  Weave in both yarn ends securely before cutting tail.

Repeat Step 1 (rounds 1-2) to make one more circle = 2 circles made.  Set aside.  Prepare 8 strands of yarn A, approx. (8cm/3in) each plus 4 strands leftover from fasten-off.  Set aside.

Step 2: Petals
Place both circles together (from step 1) with WS facing each other.  Insert hook under both loops on both of the circles.  With yarn B ready, (leave a short yarn end of 13cm/5in).  With hook, draw yarn B through the loops, creating a starting chain on the hook.

Rnd 1: Continue with yarn B, make ch-1, then 1dc into same place.  *(make ch-9, work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, then work 1dc in each of next 8ch = 8sts.  Ending with ss into next ch on both of the circles = 1 petal made).  Rep *( ) 12 times more =13 petals made.

Rnd 2: Enlarge loop on hook and set hook aside, but do not fasten off.  Insert the 6 strands of yarn A (one at a time) into the gap between both circles.  Use the back of the hook, and gently push all the strands into the gap.
Rnd 3: Retrieve hook and insert through (enlarge) loop to continue.  Pull longer yarn end to tighten loop on hook.  Rep *( ) on Rnd 1 (of step 2) to make 3 more petals = 16 petals made.  Fasten off, leaving approx (13cm/5in).  Weave in all ends securely.

Step 3: Base, Stem and Leaves
Rnd 1: Using yarn C, make an adjustable ring.  Make ch-1, work 1dc into ring 8 times.  Pull shorter yarn end to draw ring closer.  Ending with ss into first dc at beg of round =8sts.
Rnd 2: Ch-1, work 2dc inc in each of next 8sts, ending with ss into first dc to join =16sts.
Rnd 3: Ch-1, work 1dc in each of next 16sts, ending with ss into first dc on beg of round =16sts.
Rnd 4: Ch-1, then ss in each of next 16sts around =16ss.  One base made.  Do not fasten off.  Tighten shorter yarn end of adjustable ring to close hole.
Rnd 5: Continue with yarn C from Rnd 3.  Make ch-22, 1ss into 2nd ch from hook, and then 1ss in each of next 9ch.  With loop still on hook, make ch-5, and then work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1tr in each of next 2ch, 1dc into last ch.  One leaf made. Ending with ss into 10th ch on main stem.
Rnd 6: Continue to work stem with 1ss in each of next 6ch.  For 2nd leaf, make ch-5, and work 1dc into 2nd ch from hook, 1tr in each of next 2ch, 1dc into last ch.  One leaf made.  Ending with ss into ch on stem (17th ch).
Rnd 7: Continue to work stem with 1ss in each of next 4ch =21ss (1 stem and 2 leaves made).
Fasten off and weave in both yarn ends securely.

Step 4: Assembly

  1. Thread sewing needle with a light green colour thread, bring both ends together to tie a double knot to secure. Insert needle into back (WS) of flower. Make a secure knot, then insert needle into RS of base.  Sew around base and flower with regular stitches to join both pieces together.  Do not fasten off.
