With or Without a Motif

Crochet motifs are simple and easy to make.  The repeated patterns can quickly become addictive, because of the satisfying results it gives. You can create as many as you like, depending on the size of your project. Making only about seven or more will give you a simple stole, and although it can be quite time-consuming, the results are worth your efforts.

STEP 1:  MAKE ONE CIRCLE MOTIF

Rnd 1: Ch-7, then ss into first st at beg of round to join into a circle.

Rnd 2: Ch-1, then 1dc into circle 18 times, ss into first st at beg of round to join =18sts.

**to work a 3-tr bobble (3 trebles-bobble)

Work 3 incomplete trebles into the same st (place), there are now 4 loops on the hook, yrh and draw yarn through all 4 loops at the same time.  One 3tr-bobble made.

Rnd 3: ch-3 (count as 1tr), then work 2 incomplete trebles into same st, yrh and draw yarn through all 3 loops at the same time.  One 3tr-bobble made.  Continue to work *(ch-4, miss 2sts from previous round, 3tr-bobble into 3rd st), rep *( ) 4 times more.  Ending with ch-4, ss into top of ch-3 at beg of round to join.

**Note there is 1 loop less on the last stage – because we begin with ch-3.  But the next bobble will continue with the above method.

Rnd 4: ch-3 (count as 1 treble), 1tr, ch-4 and 2tr into same st.  Continue to work *(ch-4, miss next 4sts from previous round, 2tr, ch-4, 2tr into next st on top of bobble from previous round), rep *( ) 4 times more.  Ending with ch-4, ss into top of ch-3 at beg of round.

Rnd 5: ch-1, work *(1dc into next st, ch-6, miss next 4sts from previous round), rep *( ) 10 times more.  Ending with 1dc into next st, then ch-3 and 1tr into first dc at beg of round.

Rnd 6: ch-1, 1dc around tr st.  Work *(ch-7, 1dc around ch-6 from previous round), rep *( ) 10 times more.  Ending with ch-7 and ss into first ch from beg of round.

Rnd 7: ch-1, *(3dc, ch-4 (forms 1picot) and 3dc around ch-7 from previous round, then ch-3), and rep *( )10 times more.  Ending with 3dc, ch-4 and 3dc around last ch-7 from previous round, ch-3 and ss into first dc from beg of round.  One circle motif made.

Step 2:
Using the same method from rounds 1-7 to make 6 more motifs to complete your project.

STEP 3: ASSEMBLY

  1. Weave in all yarn ends for each motif.
  2. Thread tapestry needle with a short length of yarn (approx. 25cm). This is use to join the motifs together.
  3. From WS of one motif, insert needle into one of (ch-4 picot) of last round (7), leaving a yarn end of approx. 10cm.
  4. Secure with a few stitches, then insert needle into one of (ch-4 picot) on another motif (ensure WS are facing the same way while joining).
  5. Secure with a few stitches on second motif.  Then guide needle carefully through stitches along the motif you are working on until you reach the next set of (ch-4) picot – still on the same motif.
  6. Make a few stitches on that motif, then join the opposite side of the other motif. Ensure to align them neatly.
  7. Now two motifs are joined. Fasten off; weave in both yarn ends neatly and securely before cutting tail.
  8. Try to press the motifs into shape with steam for a neat and tidy finish.

Join in the third motif and repeat until you have a lovely mini stole. Wear it over a light jacket or a summer dress.

Happy creating!
