Let it snow…let it snow

Make Frostie and let him join you for the festive season. Frostie is easy and quick to crochet if you already know the basic stitches, but don’t worry if you are new to crochet. The examples here will help you to learn how to crochet Frostie. All you need is some time and patience.

crochet snowman pattern

Note: The crochet method used in this pattern is Amigurumi pronounced (Ahma-goo-romie). The Japanese art of knitting or crocheting for stuffed animals.  The method is to work in spiral rounds continuously without joining each round with a slipstitch.

The secret to achieve the correct number of rounds and stitches is to use a stitch marker.  Simply work the first stitch then place the stitch marker on that stitch to mark the beginning of your round. Continue with this method each time you begin a new round.  Try to make regular stitches on every round for a tight gauge, and to prevent stuffing from showing through your work.

You will need:

  • About 20-30g of DK weight yarn in Cream (A)
  • About 10g of DK weight yarn in Red (B)
  • Small amount of DK weight yarn in orange
  • Small amount of cotton yarn or thick thread in black
  • (I have used Patons 100% cotton DK).  You can use yarn with similar weight, but your snowman may be smaller or bigger
  • Crochet hook 3.00mm
  • Toy stuffing (for head) and beans for body (optional)
  • Stuffing for the body, I have added a small amount of dried Soya beans to make Frostie more sturdy, but toy stuffing will be as good
  • 2 x small buttons
  • 1 x pair of safety eyes with backs
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Needle and small amount of thread in red and white
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

  • magic ring
  • beg – beginning
  • slipknot
  • (*) rep from and within brackets
  • ss – slipstitch
  • st – stitch
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • dc inc – double crochet increase
  • dc2tog – double crochet decrease
  • tr – treble stitch
  • Rnd – round
  • Exact tension is not important on this project – but a tight gauge will ensure stuffing won’t show through
  • Finished measurements: from head to base without beanie (height 8cm/3.2in) (diameter head 14cm/5.5in) (body 18cm/7.2in) approx.

 Step 1: The head
Rnd 1: Using yarn A, make a magic ring.

How to make an adjustable (Magic) ring
The magic ring is a simple way to create a circle.  The method allows you to close the centre hole as tight as possible, which is very useful when creating accessories or toys.

how to make a magic ring

1. Using the long yarn end (ball of yarn) and form a ring with shorter strand of yarn (tail) sitting beneath long yarn end. With your hook, go underneath the first strand of ring and draw the long yarn end (ball of yarn) through the ring.

2-3. Continue to bring the strand of yarn upwards to form one loop on the hook.  This will be your starting chain.

4. With the starting chain ready, make the number of chains needed on the pattern.  You can adjust the ring to a manageable size by pulling the shorter yarn end to make crocheting easier.

Rnd 2: Ch-2, then 6-dc into ring (*Insert hook into centre of ring, yrh and draw (longer yarn end) under ring and over, 2 loops on hook. Yrh again, and draw through both loops on hook – one loop remains on hook).  One dc made.  Rep (*) five times.

At the end of the round, gently pull the shorter yarn end to draw the ring closer.  Do not join with ss.  Stitch marker Ready!

Begin Double Crochet increase (dc inc)
Rnd 3: Work 2dc in first st (use stitch marker to mark beg of round by inserting it into the first st of each round) once st has been worked.  Using dc st method, work 2-dc into each st.  Rep (*) five times = 12dc.

Rnd 4: Work (*1dc in next st, then 2dc in next same st) rep (*) 5 times =18dc
Rnd 5: Work (*1dc in each of next 2sts, then 2dc in next same st) rep (*) 5 times =24dc
Rnd 6: 1dc in each of next 24sts =24dc
Rnd 7: Work (*1dc in each next 3sts, then 2dc in next same st) rep (*) 5 times =30dc
Rnds 8 – 11: Work (*1dc in each of next 30sts) =30dc rep (*) for each round.

Begin Double Crochet decrease (dc2tog)
How to:
1-2. Insert hook in next st (under both loops), yrh and draw a loop through.  (2 loops on hook).
3-4.  Insert hook in next st (under both loops), and draw another loop through, (3 loops on hook).
5-6. Yrh and draw through all 3 loops on the hook at the same time.  One loop remains on hook.  One decrease made.

Rnd 12: Work (*1dc in each of next 3sts, then dc2tog). Rep (*) 5 times =24dc
Rnd 13: Work (*1dc in each of next 2sts, then dc2tog). Rep (*) 5 times = 18dc
Rnd 14: Work (*1dc in next st, then dc2tog). Rep (*) 5 times =12dc

Fasten off leaving a long yarn tail (approx. 20cm/8in).  Gently pull shorter yarn tail from magic ring to tighten hole, weave in yarn end to inside of work and cut.  Do not cut weave in long yarn tail.  Set aside.

Step 2: The body
Rnd 1: Using yarn A, make a magic ring.
Rnd 2: Ch-1, then 6-dc into ring (*insert hook into centre of ring, yrh and draw (longer yarn end) under ring and over, 2 loops on hook. Yrh again, and draw through both loops on hook – 1 loop remains on hook).  One dc made.  Rep (*) five times =6dc.

Rnd 7: (*1dc in each of next 4sts, then 2dc in next st). Rep (*) 5 times =36dc
Rnds 8 – 13: Work (*1dc in each of next 36sts) = 36dc rep (*) for each round.

Begin Double Crochet decrease (dc2tog)

Rnd 14: Work (*1dc in each of next 4sts, then dc2tog). Rep (*) 5 times =30dc
Rnd 15: 1dc in each of next 30sts = 30dc
Rnd 16: (*1dc in each of next 3sts, then dc2tog). Rep (*) 5 times =24dc
Rnd 17: (*1dc in each of next 2sts, then dc2tog). Rep (*) 5 times =18dc
Rnd 18: (*1dc in next st, then dc2tog). Rep (*) 5 times =12dc

Fasten off leaving a long yarn tail (approx. 25cm/10in).  Gently pull shorter yarn tail from magic ring to tighten hole, weave in yarn end to inside of work and cut.  Do not weave in/cut long yarn tail.  Set aside.

Step 3: The nose
Rnd 1: Using orange yarn.  Make a foundation chain of ch-2, then 1dc into 2nd chain from hook, and continue with 1dc in each of next 3sts =4dc
Rnd 2: 1dc in each st =4dc

Fasten off leaving a yarn tail of (10cm/4in). Thread tapestry needle and sew small gap together to form a carrot shape nose. Weave in yarn ends and cut. Set aside.

Step 4: The beanie
Using yarn A and B or a single colour (crochet in the round).

Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch-3 (count as 1tr), and then 8tr into ring, ss to join =9tr
Rnd 2: ch-3 (count as 1tr) and 1tr in same st, then 2tr in each of next 8sts =18tr
How to make a treble stitch into ring (tr)
1-2. Yrh, insert hook into ring (under both loops).
2-3. Yrh again, draw yarn through creating 3 loops on hook.
4-5. Yrh again, and draw through (only) 2 loops on the hook, 2 loops remains on hook.

6-7. Yrh again, and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook, 1 loop remain on hook.  One treble stitch made.
Rnd 3: ch-3, 2tr in next st, (*1tr in next st, then 2tr in next st) rep (*) 7 times = 27tr
Rnd 4: 1dc in each of next 27sts until end = 27dc

  1. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail of (10cm/4in). Pull magic ring at beg of round to tighten.  Weave in yarn ends and cut.
  2. Using yarn B to make a tiny pom pom for beanie.

Step 5: The scarf
Using yarn B, ch-3

Rnd 1: 1dc into 2nd chain from hook, 1dc in next st =2dc
Rnd 2: turn work around to other side. Ch-1, then 1dc in each of next 2sts =2dc
Rnd 3: continue this way until scarf measures approx.(18cm/7in).

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail (10cm/4in). Weave in yarn ends and cut tail.  Then use black yarn to create a fringe on both ends of scarf.

Step 6: Assembly

  1. Turn head inside out. Position safety eyes (3cm/1.1in) away from start of magic hole and eyes (2cm/0.14in) apart.
  2. Thread needle with white thread and sew on nose between eyes (as shown).
  3. Using black yarn, sew to form a smile under the nose.
  4. Thread tapestry needle with long yarn tail from head. Work anti-clockwise – slanting the needle from right to left – through and overlapping both loops on the edge (like over sewing).  Repeat 12 times around gap.  Make several secure stitches across to close gap.  Weave in yarn end and cut.
  5. Repeat for the body – make several knots to secure but don’t cut yarn tail.
  6. Using yarn tail from body, sew to join head onto body until secure (ensure both gaps are facing each other). Weave in yarn end and cut.
  7. Wrap scarf around Frostie’s neck (as shown). Thread needle with red thread and make a few stitches into scarf to keep it in place.
  8. Sew buttons on body.
  9. Sew pom pom onto top of beanie and wear it on Frostie’s head – now he can join you for the festive season.
