Saint Valentine’s Day

St Valentine is a third-century Roman saint remembered on February 14 each year. During the high Middle Ages, he was associated with a ‘courtly love’ tradition.

In literary conception, courtly love indicates nobility and chivalry. The illustrations promote chivalrous knights that set out on adventures, and before they leave – they present their courteous and gallant behaviour towards ladies to show their affection of courtly love. Some speculated that birds paired couples in mid-February.

To celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day, make this heart-to-heart coaster and share it with your favourite hot drink!

HEARTS Make 2
STEP 1
Using yarn A, make an adjustable ring.

Rnd 1: ch-1, make 6dc into the ring, then ss into first dc to join circle =6sts.
Rnd 2: ch-1, turn work around to work on the other side, then 2dc in the next 6sts =12sts.
Rnd 3: ch-1, turn, work 2dc in first st, then 1dc in each of next 2sts, *(2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st), rep *() one more time, 1dc in each of next 2sts, 2dc in last st =18sts.
Rnd 4: ch-1, turn, 1dc in each of next 2sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in next st, *(2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 3sts, 2dc in next st), rep *() one more time, 1dc in next st, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of last 2sts =24sts.
Rnd 5: ch-1, turn, 1dc in each of next 2sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 2sts, *(2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 5sts, 2dc in next st), rep *() one more time, 1dc in each of next 2sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of last 2sts =30sts.
Rnd 6: ch-1, turn, 1dc in each of next 2sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 3sts, *(2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 7sts, 2dc in next st), rep *() one more time, 1dc in next 3sts, 2dc in next st, 1dc in each of last 2sts =36sts.

Shaping of the Heart:

Rnd 7: ch-1, turn, dc2tog in next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 5sts, *(2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 9sts, 2dc in next st), rep *() one more time, 1dc in each of next 5sts, dc2tog in last 2sts =38sts.
Rnd 8: ch-1, turn, dc2tog in next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 4sts, *(2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 11sts, 2dc in next st), rep *() one more time, 1dc in each of next 4sts, dc2tog in last 2sts =40sts.
Rnd 9: ch-1, turn, dc2tog in next 2sts, 1dc in each of next 3sts, *(2dc in next st, 1dc in each of next 13sts, 2dc in next st), rep *() one more time, 1dc in each of next 3sts, dc2tog in last 2sts =42sts.
Fasten off and weave in yarn ends for both hearts.

STEP 2
Making up and crochet edging:
Joining the two hearts together will create a more sturdy coaster.

Rnd 1: Place both hearts wrong side facing each one.  Yarn B (Pink) is in the ready position. Insert the hook into both hearts’ centre top (Rnd 1 of step 1), and draw new yarn (B) through, creating one loop on the hook.  This is your starting chain.
Rnd 2: ch-1, then dc into next st; it’s a little tricky trying to find the right st to work, but try to work into round 2 of step 1 and round 3 and so on.  The sts will become more apparent as you work.  Continue to work 1dc in each st around the edges until end =58sts.  Fasten off securely with a tapestry needle, and bring the needle and yarn through the edge of the heart before cutting the yarn.

Happy creating!
